CONFERENCE

AHHAP was well-represented at the Southern California Recovery Summit

Southern California Recovery Summit

The 2010 Recovery Summit was Saturday November 6 at Loyola Marymount University. This year's program features Terence Gorski, Dr. Westley Clark, Dr. Thomas Freese, Dr. William Glasser and other outstanding speakers.

The Summit was one of Southern California's most prominent addiction conferences.

About the Coalition and Network

The Sober Living Network is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to excellence in the operation and management of sober living. Today over 500 Network affiliated homes serve 25,000 recovering addicts and alcoholics in Southern California each year.

Members of the Los Angeles County Sober Living Coalition operate more than 300 independent sober living homes across Los Angeles County.

AHHAP was a sponsor of the Summit and the board members attended the day long conference on Saturday.  The Summit was the 4th annual symposium bringing a voice to this part of the recovery industry.  The event was standing room only at the Loyola Marymount University. The sponsors, Coalition and the Network, represent sober living and social model recovery for small and large programs which are organized under geographic coalitions and come under the umbrella of The Network.

The conference was presented from many viewpoints, and focused on the experiences of people working in the field. Presenters and panelists include psychologists, sober living providers, physicians, homeless services providers, interventionists, social workers and criminal justice. The White House Office of Drug Policy Control anchored a message of recovery at the federal policy level. State officials brought more local topics of interest and finally providers weighed in what this means to the recovery housing industries.

Patricia Henderson from Women In New Recovery in Arizona, long time member of AHHAP, sat as one of the panelist presenting on how this translates to the providers in the community and why we might want to be aware of the policies that are being crafted at state and federal levels.  Some of the highlights of the panel were grants are available to develop Recovery Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC). The concepts under ROSC are very much related to the way sober living and recovery housing providers currently approach working with addicts and alcoholics. Basically, it is the realization that people in new recovery need supportive environments on many fronts such as housing, transportation, jobs and mental health services in order to have the best opportunity for long-term recovery. You can get more information about ROSC at www.samhsa.gov.

Additionally, AHHAP held their mid-annual board meeting all day Friday, November 5, 2010 to discuss the future leadership roles AHHAP will be playing in communities throughout the United States. Members will be hearing from the board over the next several months. Please note that we have a monthly conference call and the minutes are available after these phone calls so you can be aware of what your national association is up to.

We would love to hear from the folks in the field so please feel free to contact any one at AHHAP or one of the current board members. If you do not know who to contact, please feel free to tell us and we will give you a list. AHHAP’s website is www.ahhap.org.
